Annotations for Jodie steele sophie isaacs tshan williams and original west end cast of heathers candy store

Lyric: Color me stoked!
Annotation:
Veronica is finding it hard to fake being happy, as she knows that the note is fake. She is feeling guilty that she almost betrayed her best friend by giving her so much false hope, ultimately leading to Martha attempting suicide in ‘Kindergarten Boyfriend’.

Lyric: She would leave you to rot!
Annotation:
The Heathers are trying to place doubt in Veronica’s mind about how kind Martha really is. It’s highly unlikely that she would leave Veronica ‘to rot’, as her heart is so pure.

Lyric: I’d normally slap your face off
 And everyone here could watch
Annotation:
Shows that Heather Chandler isn’t afraid to be violent, and will use it to gain popularity, hence ‘everyone here could watch’.

Lyric: Not your friend
Annotation:
The Heathers are trying to separate Veronica from “uncool” people, like Martha. Cliques like them usually don’t let members have other friends, especially not unpopular ones.

Lyric: Porsche
Annotation:
Another mention of Chandler showing off her wealth

Lyric: Maxing Dad’s credit card
Annotation:
Heather Chandler is a basic “spoiled rich girl” archetype. It is likely that her dad just sends her his credit card, not caring how she will use it to buy unnecessary, expensive things, or she just steals it yet gets no punishment. It also shows her love for luxury and excess.

Lyric: Buying stuff they cannot
Annotation:
Heather Chandler is known for being stuck-up, and is most likely rich. With this combined, she probably likes to buy expensive things, and rub it in the faces of those who cannot.

Lyric: Sesame Street is on
Annotation:
sesame street is/was a popular kids tv show so are likely comparing Veronica and Martha to babies

Lyric: You’ve come so far
Annotation:
Chandler points out to Veronica that the Heathers were the reason Veronica got as far as she did.

Lyric: Veronica, look! Ram invited me to his homecoming party, see? I told you there was still something there! This proves he’s been thinking about me!
Annotation:
Earlier in the musical, the Heathers make Veronica write a note to Martha in Ram’s handwriting, inviting her to his homecoming party as a prank

Lyric: [H. CHANDLER]
 You can fly with eagles
Annotation:
This could be a reference to the movie, where Veronica, quoting Heather Chandler, says “You want to fuck with the eagles, you have to learn to fly.”

Lyric: [H. CHANDLER]
 Say goodbye to
Annotation:
In the west end choreography, Chandler is shown pushing Duke and McNamara out of the way, before saying this line, possibly showing, along with the iconic “shut up heather”, how Chandler feels like she must stay in power, and shut down all other people who try to take that power.

Lyric: Are we gonna have a problem?
You got a bone to pick?
Annotation:
Veronica refuses to forge a letter in Ramsy’s handwriting to prank Martha hence, heather breaks into song to call her a loser.

Lyric: [H. DUKE & H. MCNAMARA]
Or you can bitch and moan

 [H. CHANDLER]
 You can live the dream

 [H. DUKE & H. MCNAMARA]
 Or you can die alone
Annotation:
This is foreshadowing the song Shine a Light (Reprise) where Duke relentlessly bullies Mcnamara. “Your ass is off the team, go on and ‘bitch and moan’. you don’t deserve ‘the dream’ you’re going to ‘die alone’. It’s even in the same order. And Duke and Mcnamara sing these parts of Candy Store together, showing their connection with one another.

Lyric: Time for you to prove
 You’re not a loser anymore
Then step into my candy store
Annotation:
Before Veronica was a loser and by giving the fake note to Martha Veronica can prove she’s not going back to Martha and being socially rejected. The candy store is the Heathers as a whole as they are far above everyone else, both socially and financially.

Lyric: Her
Annotation:
The Heathers are referring to Martha in this line as she isn’t very popular in school and is considered uncool by the popular crowd.

Lyric: Let your mommy fix you a snack
Annotation:
This foreshadows Veronica’s mom in “Meant To Be Yours” coming into her room with a snack after JD discovers her hanging.

Lyric: Biatch!
Annotation:
This is a significantly easier way to say “bitch” & also seems cooler.

Lyric: My Jeep
Annotation:
Something I think about a lot: Before singing Lifeboat, Heather Mac says “and I’m like, jesus, I’m on the bus again because all my rides to school are dead!” but Heather Duke is alive and has a Jeep, is she such a bad friend she won’t even give Heather M a ride?

Lyric: [H. DUKE]
 Honey, whatchu waiting for—

 [H. CHANDLER, spoken]
 Shut up, Heather!
Annotation:
Heather Duke, ever-envious of Chandler’s position, tries to solo here. Chandler, always needing to keep Duke in her place, pushes her off. This is one of the most iconic moments of the song.

Lyric: Why now are you pulling on my dick?
Annotation:
This is a reference to a line Duke says in the movie. It also demonstrates the bold, violent tactics Chandler uses to get what she wants.

Lyric: Shamu
Annotation:
Shamu was a famous killer whale in Sea World back in the 80s. Calling her Shamu is essentially calling her fat and ugly which isn’t very nice and is exactly how the Heathers acts towards anyone who isn’t cool or popular. This line also emphasises their dislike of Martha.
